The Wildlife Department of Haryana plays a pivotal role in the conservation, protection, and sustainable management of the state’s rich biodiversity and natural ecosystems. As the nodal authority for wildlife governance in the state, the department undertakes a diverse range of responsibilities that align with national and international environmental mandates.
Key Functions Include:
- Implementation of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972
Enforcing wildlife protection laws to safeguard endangered species, regulate hunting and poaching, and maintain ecological balance in accordance with the Wildlife (Protection) Act and other related legal frameworks. - Scientific Management of Protected Areas and Habitats
Overseeing the effective management of national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, conservation reserves, and critical habitats, including restoration of degraded ecosystems and prevention of habitat fragmentation.
- Eco-tourism Development and Environmental Education
Promoting responsible eco-tourism that supports conservation goals while providing environmental education and nature interpretation to the public, schools, and research institutions.
- Wildlife Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation
Responding to wildlife distress, conducting rescue and rehabilitation operations, and implementing proactive measures to minimize conflicts between local communities and wild animals. - Regulation of Exotic Species under CITES
Regulating the possession, trade, and breeding of exotic species listed under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) through proper registration, monitoring, and compliance. - Monitoring of Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZs) and Biodiversity Conservation Initiatives
Coordinating landscape-level biodiversity conservation projects, mapping and monitoring ESZs, and supporting national missions like Green India, National Biodiversity Action Plan, and State Action Plans on Climate Change. - Community Participation, Awareness & Capacity Building
Engaging with local communities, forest dwellers, and youth through awareness campaigns, training programs, village eco-development initiatives, and participatory conservation models to ensure inclusive stewardship of natural resources.
